Egg-celent Eggs-periment

Today Leopard class enjoyed an Easter activity that combined Science skills with DT, Maths and PSHE.

The children were put into random groups and given the challenge to design something that would protect an egg from a fall.

Before we could do this we needed to discuss why it was that eggs break when they fall. Many of us thought that this was because eggs are fragile. In fact, an egg shell is strong! Miss Starling held an egg in her fist and squeezed but the egg did not break! We found that this was because the force applied to the egg was evenly distributed. For a chick to get out of an egg, they have to put the force on on small bit to crack it. This is was happens when an eggs fall, and therefore why it breaks.

Having discovered this, the designing and building stage was under-way! Every group that tested their design found that their egg was undamaged after the fall, as they were able to even distribute the impact of the fall. Well done everyone!

It was a fun day with lots of skills applied and as many egg puns used a we possibly could.

World Book Day

We had a great day for World Book Day today; the children all had amazing costumes! We began the day with some reading, and then played a game similar to pictionary that made us think about the plots in different books. We also thought about what makes a good book cover and used it to design our own.

Our writing homework for this week is to write a blurb for our favourite book. Why not have a look at a few different blurbs to get some ideas?

Our first ukulele lesson

Today saw our first ukulele lesson. The children were very excited to be learning play an instrument. They listened very well about how to treat the instrument with respect, and have patience with yourself when learning.

They even learnt their first chord, and were able to play it together in a song!

Can your child remember the notes of each of the strings on a ukulele? If not, see if this helps remind them:

Macbeth Success!

Wow! All the children did themselves proud today at St. George’s Theatre. They performed amazingly well, and even had some members of the audience in tears! If you saw it, I am sure you will agree with me that we definitely have some budding actors in year 5…

There is display in school with several photos from the event if you were unable to attend, or just want to be reminded of the children’s amazing achievement.

Macbeth preparations begin!

Today year 5 visited the Time and Tide Museum to learn some acting skills ready for their production of Macbeth. They got to see 3 scenes performed by actors, who then worked with the children to help them think about how to use their body and their voice effectively.

The children learnt 4 ways of using their voice on the stage – can they show you all 4 different ways and explain them?

Extra maths sessions

All the children in Key Stage 2 have been working together on number bonds and times tables.  It has been great to see the children from different year groups working together so well.  Ask your child what they are learning this week and see if you can help them get quicker.
